Paris Carnival’s colourful and exciting procession – Hotel du Nord et de l’Est

2012’s carnival will take place in Paris on Sunday February 19th from 1pm and will include two processions.

The Paris carnival 2012 will include two processions!

One from the Droit à la Culture association on the theme of the Arche de Noé (Noah’s Ark) and the other from the Macaq association on the theme of Venu d’ailleurs (from another world).

Enormous animals and international musicians will bring this merry afternoon to life until 7pm outside the Hôtel de Ville.

The carnival is scheduled to begin at 1pm when the celebratory troop of revellers will head for Paris’ Hôtel de Ville where they are scheduled to arrive at 7pm. 2012’s route will take all sorts of floats, giants, puppeteers, clowns, musicians, dancers and characters in costume through the city’s most iconic streets in the five arrondissements from Boulevard Ménilmontant to Rue de Rivoli via Rue du Temple. Let’s get the party started!

Event in Paris: The 6 Nations Tournament at the Stade de France – Hotel du Nord et de l’Est

The Stade de France in Saint-Denis, near Paris will host the first match of the 6 Nations Tournament between France and Italy on February 4th. Saint-Denis sets the scene for the blues’ big comeback with new coach Philippe Saint-André after losing the World Cup final Tournoi des VI Nations.

This will be the first game the team has played since the World Cup in New Zealand last autumn. The French players will be out for revenge after losing 22-21 in Rome to the azzurri at last year’s 6 Nations and losing their title as champions having beaten England, their age-old rival, back in 2010.

Through 400 exhibits, which have rarely or never before been on public display, the Trompe-l’œil, imitations, pastiches and other illusions exhibition which is being held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris until 15^th November 2013 is an amazing adventure for the senses which, manipulated, deluded or confused, do not necessarily perceive things as they really are. A visit which is as deceiving as it is entertaining…

While the Baroque period made it an artistic genre in its own right, references to trompe-l’œil are found as early as antiquity. Zeuxis painted grapes so realistic that birds came to peck at them! Since then, optical illusions have been widely developed and there are an infinite number of objects, art works or advertisements which have integrated them, thereby altering the perception of reality.

This exhibition takes visitors on a big treasure hunt through time and materials, to discover examples, some funny, some disturbing, which continuously trick the eye and the mind. Here, a material is not what it seems, there, wigs and bustles modify and enhance silhouettes, elsewhere, the function of an object causes confusion…You will not believe your eyes!

Inaugurated in 1989, the Bastille Opera of Paris owes its creation to President François Mitterrand who wanted to create an alternative to the Opéra Garnier, often sold out. Since then, it has been delighting audiences with its high quality programme and excellent acoustics year after year.

The tender launched for its construction inspired almost 1700 architects: in the end it was the project put forward by Carlos Ott, who played on the transparency of the facades and the use of identical materials for the interior and exterior of the building, which was selected after the examination of the different proposals.

Its stage facilities, its integrated workshops and its rehearsal rooms make it a modern theatre on an international dimension.

Over the next few months, this prestigious theatre will stage Rigoletto, the opera in 3 acts by Giuseppe Verdi, as well as Pelléas and Mélisande by Claude Debussy, and Don Giovanni, composed by Mozart.

However, tickets for such grandiose performances are always in high demand and it is necessary to book some time in advance.

A homemade Galette des Rois – Hotel du Nord et de l’Est Paris

Galette des Rois : the ever-popular puff pastry frangipane cake is easy to make at home. Why would you limit yourself to eat one only during the period of epiphany? Here is the recipe, to enjoy it when and as much as you feel like.

You will need 2 sheets of puff pastry, 1 egg yolk, 100g of ground almonds, 100g of butter, 100g of icing sugar, 2 eggs, 1 tbsp of flour and 1 tbsp of milk or rum.

Mix sugar, flour and ground almonds in a large bowl to make the frangipane. Add cubes of butter and mix using fingers before adding the 2 eggs and milk (or rum). Everything should be mixed until all the ingredients are fully combined. The resulting frangipane should be put on a sheet of puff pastry on greaseproof paper.

After putting a lucky figurine in the frangipane, cover with the second sheet of pastry and seal the edges before egg washing the top with the yolk. Make a small hole in the middle so steam can escape during cooking and bake for 25 to 30 minutes in a 180° oven.
